DAY 7 Raleigh to Washington DC

Got up very early and very bleary eyed for the drive back to DC.  Although the freeways make for easy driving we long to see something besides hundreds of miles of ashphalt, screening trees and sound barriers.  It makes the time seem longer than it really is.
Picnic in the dark by the Jefferson Memorial

Managed to get a little lost driving into Washington and trying to find the hire car return.  We ended up on the wrong side of the river but kept our sense of humour - at least here we can stop and ask directions, which won't be so easy in France!

Wendy collected us at the airport and we had lunch at a nearby Italian restaurant with Wendy's friend Lisa before driving in to Georgetown.  We spent a relaxing hour or so eating Ben & Jerry's icecream (yum!) and wandering around this intriguing neighbourhood with it's curious blend of history and modern culture and waiting for Matthew to finish work.
Keli and Matthew on the steps of the Lincoln Monument

That evening we took a picnic to the banks of the river by the Jefferson Memorial.  We took Keli and she even had her own picnic, she was so well behaved I think she was just happy to be with us.

We toured the Jefferson Memorial then went over to the Vietnam wall and the Lincoln Monument.  These vast monuments are an awe inspiring sight, white marble glowing white in the moonlight.
