DAY 23 Lakes District

Started out the day on the M6 heading north but soon tired of the freeway and took a scenic route through the Wrynose and Hardknott passes through the mountains in the Lakes District.  The road was a single lane, winding trail and so steep in places that our little hire car was spinning it's wheels!  The country here is truly awesome - bleak, towering mountains covered with heather and shrouded in misty clouds.  We stopped at the Hardknott Roman Fort (where I sunk almost up to my knee in the soft, wet ground), the fort was built in around 122AD.

Stopped briefly at Carlisle and visited Carlisle Castle which was built in the 11th Century but is extremely well preserved as it was in use as a military base until as late as 1970.  We went in search of Hadrian's wall and found a fairly long section of ruins and walked along it for some way before finding a pub to stay at for the night in the town of Haltwhistle (which claims to be the very centre of Britain).
