DAY 35 Chenenceau to Chatellerault

After a leisurely, delicious breakfast we found a way across and strolled along the river - Chateau Chenenceau looks so beautiful and tranquil in the soft, morning light.  We drove back towards Mont Richard thinking we might do the tour of the wine caves but we were a little late so instead went to the nearby town of Amboise where we bought lunch and ate it by the river.

Magnificent Chateau Chenenceau
Lions

We were intrigued by several signs indicating 'Aigles' (Eagles) flying displays and decided to call at the Beauval Parc Zoo to see what they were about.  We were about an hour early so we wandered around the zoo itself, enjoying it a whole lot more than we expected to - I think it's years since we last went to a zoo and all the animals were healthy and contented with the possible exception of a pair of black pumas which were pacing up and down their fence glaring hate at everyone.

The aerial show by the birds-of-prey was magnificent. Preceded by a predictably cute display by seals and sealions it was held over their pool and went on for the best part of an hour with the birds swooping down low over the crowd in the stands - close enough to feel the breeze of their passing and quite exciting to see them so close and seemingly diving right at us. They had a huge variety of birds and it's a pity we couldn't understand the commentary to know which was which.

Afterwards we spent a little more time looking around the zoo and were walking towards the entrance just as feeding time commenced - it was interesting to watch them feeding the wild dogs and big cats - whole, raw chickens for the most part with a few larger 'recreational' type bones.

Sea Eagle

We drove on towards Nicolas and Valina's at Chatellerault and managed to get thoroughly lost - there seemed to be so many one way streets!.  In the end we gave up and bought a map and so were only a little late.
It was wonderful to see Nicolas again after so many years and to meet Valina at last.  While we were there Valina was some 4 months pregnant with their first child - Louis was born on 8th Feb 2000 and you can see him at Nicolas and Valina's Website   Bienvenue à Louis!
