DAY 26 Northern Scotland

We really wanted to see the northern coast so made the decision to drive across there today, it would be a lot of ground to cover but better a glimpse than miss it altogether.

Started driving in moderately heavy rain towards the northern highlands but as we travelled higher the rain began to clear a little and we passed through still more incredible countryside.  Stopped at Durness and walked down to Smoo Cave though we couldn't go far inside because of risk of flooding.  Travelled a lot of single lane roads with sheep grazing along the roadsides and few fences in sight - the countryside is so bleak and harsh, I imagine it is not be an easy place to live.

We stopped at a little teahouse in the middle of nowhere with a beautiful view and lingered a short while at the pretty coastal town of Ullapool - this is another place we would have liked to spend more time.  We decided to go as far as Kyle of Lochalsh and see Eileann Donan Castle and arrived there just as the sun was setting - it looked spectacular.
